Employee Spotlight: Anja Godlewski-Dykes

01.01.16

The “Hyve” in our name is the Finnish word for virtue. We believe in acting virtuously with all the work that we do. Living up to this standard wouldn’t be possible without a crew of employees who believe in doing the right thing—every single time. Doing the right thing for our clients is at the cornerstone of everything that we do.

There’s a reason why our crew and our clients are important values of Digital Hyve: without our diverse crew of marketers, and the clients who are constantly inspiring us to be better every day, there would be no Digital Hyve. Our crew is important, and each member brings a different set of skills to the table while contributing to our company’s culture. We wouldn’t be able to develop measurable and meaningful results for our clients—or have the culture we do—without our employees.

Our Employee Spotlight Series will give you a glimpse of the people responsible for the meaningful work we do!

Introducing Anja, our Account Manager!

1.     What initially drew you to marketing? What brought you to Digital Hyve?

What drew me to marketing was the fact that the industry sits perfectly at the crossroads of strategy and creativity. As someone with a love for strategic problem solving, data, eye catching visuals and clever messaging, marketing was the perfect career path for me to follow!

The choice to work at Digital Hyve was simple, I wanted to work for a company that allowed me to collaborate with other like-minded marketers. I’m a firm believer that the best ideas come out of strong collaborations amongst people with different backgrounds, strengths and visions. I love that Digital Hyve allows me to work with a team of digital marketing producers, graphic designers, SEO specialists, content writers and analysts to deliver the best campaigns and creative projects for my clients!

2.     Which of our values do you identify with the most and why? (DH Crew, Clients, Integrity, Passion, Better Every Day)

Better Every Day! It’s funny because being better every day has been one of my driving life philosophies for as long as I can remember. When DH adopted “Better Every Day” as one of our core values, I knew then that I was working for a company that was such a great fit both professionally and personally. I push myself daily to either learn something new, step outside of my comfort zone, or refine a skill – currently working on gardening, which don’t laugh, but that is a skill haha! The amazing “Better Every Day” mural that one of our graphic designers painted in our office (shout out to Connor!), is a constant reminder to keep pushing myself and others to truly be better every day.

3.     What does your day to day look like at Digital Hyve?

As an account manager at DH, every day is different – which is one of my favorite aspects about my job! I would say on average I spend half of my day talking to clients (answering questions, solving problems, discussing campaign performance) and the other half of my day talking to my team (brainstorming campaign ideas, identifying opportunities for my clients, cheering on and empowering my team). Although it’s different day to day, a few things are consistent:
1.) Gmail is always pulled up on my screen
2.) I will either be laughing or trying to make someone else laugh
3.) There’s no way I go a day at DH without the 2-3 cups of coffee!

4.     What type of marketing excites you? Why?

I get excited by brands that use emotional marketing, especially when the campaign is centered around happiness and optimism, something I think we need more of in our society. I think Coca-Cola does an excellent job on this! I love the 2009 “happiness ambassador” campaign and other advertisements that position Coke as a brand focused on family and friendship.

5.     The three best words to describe you?

Adventurous. Goal-oriented. Passionate.

6.     What motto or personal mantra do you live by?

Fill your life with experiences, not things. Have stories to tell, not stuff to show.

7.     You’re a pretty open book, but is there anything you think people would be surprised to know about you?

Hmmmm … well this is super nerdy, but I love collecting little trinkets or other collectables from places I visit. The nerdy part is not really the fact that I collect these things (National Park stamps, post cards, shot glasses, flattened pennies) but more so the pure excitement I get / how fast I run when I see a flattened penny machine or tourist information stand that has free maps! I know this contradicts my “Fill your life with experiences, not things…” motto, but I find that the small trinkets allow me to hold on to the memories I have from my experiences.

8.     If you could have lunch with anyone (living or dead) who would it be, and why?

I think it would be so fun and inspirational to have lunch with Ellen DeGeneres. I admire her ability to always be upbeat and positive, despite any criticism or challenges that come her way. I also love her genuine commitment to giving back and helping others. Plus, she’s one of my favorite entertainers, so I’m positive it would be a lunch filled with laughs and hopefully random dance breaks … who wouldn’t love that!?

9.     You’ve taken some amazing trips since you’ve been with us at Digital Hyve! Where would you say is the most interesting place you’ve been to so far?

One of the things I love most about DH is how the company really prioritizes work-life balance, which for me is being able to work hard and then play hard in different cities! I’m someone that learns best from experiences and being able to travel to new places and meet new people have been some of the best experiences in my life.

I recently got back from a vacation in Italy where I spent time in Florence, Luca and Cinque Terre. The vacation was the perfect balance of exploring beautiful architecture in old Italian cities, hiking along the coast of the Ligurian Sea, meeting both locals and other travelers and of course eating and drinking some of the best food and wine in the world! Above all, the reason my vacation to Italy was so amazing was it allowed me to fully immerse myself in another culture. The two-week trip in Italy made me realize the importance of taking time to enjoy your surroundings and the interactions you have with others. I tend to live a pretty busy and rushed life and it was so refreshing to shift that mentality!

10.  What’s the most important thing you’ve learned in the past 5 years?

I’m a planner, I honestly think that’s the real reason why I always wanted to work on the account side of an agency! My whole life I’ve always had an answer or a plan for everything. Over the last few years, I’ve learned two important things: 1. Not everything in life can be planned and 2. That’s totally okay!!!!
