No One Wins Accidentally

I was $40,000 in debt.  Mortgage not included.

It was two years ago. I had a good job, drove a new SUV, bought nice clothes, ate at nice restaurants, had the fancy loft apartment downtown and went on vacations.  But it was all a lie. Everything looked good on the outside, but when the curtains pulled back, there’s nothing there.  The funny thing is, I thought I was doing great.  I work hard!  I’ve sacrificed!  I deserve this stuff!  Little did I know, stupid was about to get stress tested.

One cold, snowy day in February of 2018, a trip to the gas station changed everything.  I filled up the tank and a loud “DINGGGGGGGGG” came from my cell.  “Your account is overdrawn”, the little banner showed. I sat in the car staring at the screen.  Heart racing, total panic, full-on sweat mode.  Here I was 37 years old living paycheck to paycheck, completely out of control, sitting in a parking lot in a blizzard.  Broke.  With amazing $250 custom-fit floor mats, my brand-new iPhone, and dinner plans that were about to get canceled.

I said a prayer that night and asked for advice. A glimmer of hope. An insightful little nugget of wisdom.  Anything!  The very next day, this guy named Dave Ramsey popped up in my YouTube feed. I had never heard of him and I hadn’t been searching for financial stuff.  I took it as a sign.  Three videos in and I was hooked. He shows people how to get out of debt, build wealth, change your family tree, and become outrageously generous using a proven recipe he developed called ‘The Baby Steps’:  seven steps, that when done in order, work every time. I used to think I had it all figured out, but MY best plan got me forty-kay in the hole, and HIS got 10 million people out of debt. So, I went all in.

And boy did it work. I paid off $40,000 in 14 months, built up a six-month emergency fund a few months later, and stashed away a big ol’ down payment for my first home six months after that.  He said loud and clear:  “You can wander your way into debt, but you cannot wander your way out.” It takes an “I’ve had it moment”, a series of intentional steps, and a pro in your corner.  Life today feels so much different from that snowy day two years ago, and I’m not going back.

That’s why I love my job at Digital Hyve. I have the privilege of helping businesses go from where they are, to where they want to be, with a recipe we’ve used to help hundreds of companies connect their brand and message with their perfect audience online. But don’t take my word for it; see for yourself actual results we’ve achieved for our clients here.
