At Digital Hyve, we take pride in our crew. We think it is important to not only highlight their work, but also the events and experiences that have been a part of the journey that led them to DH.
We asked Kylee Shaughnessy, Digital Marketing Assistant, and CJ Santoferrara, Account Coordinator, about their career goals, internship experience, and life outside of work. Both Kylee and CJ were interns at the Digital Hyve before coming into their current roles.
1.When you first started college, what was your dream career? Also, how did this change throughout college?
“I went into college knowing I wanted a career in advertising. This started when I took a visual advertising class in 10th grade. I didn’t know exactly what that entailed, so I majored in marketing and minored in communications. After a few semesters, I decided that I love the creative side of it all. Once I interned at Digital Hyve, I found a true passion for digital. It allows me to be creative as well as analytical since I monitor data and results from our campaigns.”
“When I first started college, I was a Business Administration Major with a concentration in Management. I always wanted to be “the boss.” I wanted to oversee a group of people and help a company grow by optimizing strategies and focusing on their specific niche. As I entered my second semester at Elmira College, I took Intro to Marketing. I only signed up for the class because it was required. I did not think I would like it. After finishing the semester, I was surprised by how much I did. I enjoyed almost everything in the class from conducting market research to setting up a mock campaign.
However, I was not sold on marketing. I took more management and marketing classes throughout my sophomore year and decided it was time for an internship. After searching around, my dad connected me with Matt Read (A previous DH employee and friend). Matt then connected me with Tim MacConaghy, the owner of Smokey Hollow Cross Fit. I spent almost 30 hours a week alongside him and the rest of the Smokey Hollow Cross Fit team, which taught me how to think outside the box and opened my eyes to dozens of new perspectives. Big shout out to Tim and the rest of the Smokey Hollow Cross Fit team for two fantastic summers! After my internship at Smokey Hollow Cross Fit, I knew marketing was what I wanted to do.”
2. Can you please describe your current role at the DH and what you feel is the most important thing you do to support the team?
“Right now, I’m part time because I am finishing my last semester of college. Over the summer I was given the opportunity to work with both the content and execution teams which allowed me to learn a lot about both parts of the company. As the Digital Marketing Assistant, I work with everyone. If a Digital Marketing Producer has a lot on their plate, I assist wherever desired from an execution standpoint. I also help with website content when needed and SEO projects. I enjoy my role at Digital Hyve because it allows me to interact with different members of the team and opens opportunity to always be learning.”
“I am currently an Account Coordinator at DH. In other words, when the Account Services team needs support, I am there. The team packs a full schedule. Everyone does a phenomenal job, but there is only so much each person can do before they become overwhelmed. That’s where I step in. Whether it’s drafting an agreement form, submitting for co-op funds, hopping on calls, or anything else, I ensure constant support for the Account Services team.”
3. How did your internship at DH prepare you for your current role?
“My internship at DH was great because I learned a lot. After interning, I was able to jump right into the Digital Marketing Assistant role without any extensive training. Interning here was the best thing I’ve done for myself because it allowed me to get ahead in my career and learn the ins and outs of digital marketing!”
“My internship prepared me for my role at DH in a number of ways! For starters, there wasn’t a huge adjustment stage. I had a good relationship with the people who worked here. It made coming into a new position WAY less intimidating. From a technical standpoint, I learned a lot of really important skills during my internship. Coming in as a full-time employee really helped me grow and develop that knowledge base, giving me the ability to think critically and strategize in ways I never would have thought of.”
4. How do you see your interests outside of DH play a role in your current position?
“Outside of DH I keep myself busy. Whether I’m jet skiing in the summer, downhill skiing in the winter, or hiking in-between, I’m always looking to do something fun. This fast-paced rhythm is paralleled in digital marketing too. There’s always something to do and learn, so I keep myself busy in and out of the office!”
“A few of my interests outside of DH play a role in how I operate in my position. One of my favorite things to do is golf. For anyone who plays, you know it takes a lot of perseverance and hard work to perfect your game. These characteristics fit into the “Better Every Day” mantra that Jake and Jeff used to start Digital Hyve. As an Account Coordinator, problem solving is one of my main tasks. Perseverance and hard work make solving problems not only easy, but much more rewarding.
